Deer for Sale - Whitetail for Sale

Whitetail deer are an important game species both socially and economically. With many states now allowing permitted, priavtely-owned commericial deer breeding facilities, it is not uncommon to find whitetail deer for sale across North America. And this makes it easier for you, the consumer, to achieve certain management objectives. Whether you are looking to buy deer to become a commercial whitetail producer yourself, or looking to purchase a group of genetically more-desirable deer to add to your existing whitetail herd, this site can help identify many of the important factors you should be thinking about while searching for deer for sale.

Any property owner performing intensive whitetail deer management will tell you that genetics is a key component of producing and growing trophy class bucks. Age and nutrition are also important, but are more easily manipulated on a ranch than genetics. Each and every fawn produced on a ranch will be the product of a buck and a doe. With this in mind, it's common sense that both bucks and does will contribute genetically to each subsequent generation. As important as genes are in determinning the quality of the deer found on a property, the simple fact remains that you can not see them! This can make it difficult when assessing deer for sale, whether for a penned deer operation or releasing on to a ranch. Now what?

Although the genotype (genes) of any buck, wild or pen-raised, is difficult to evaluatate, the phenotype is not. The phenotype is how genes are expressed - how they look. When a hunter or buyer sees the phenotype of a buck they primarily see antlers. Genes affect all the physical features of a deer, but the only real measureable (literally) features are the antlers that a buck grows based on his age. On the other hand, it is difficult to determine which does are better genetically than other does. This is why the selective culling (harvest) of does is not an effective deer management technique. All does, more or less, look the same.

As mentioned earlier, the genetics of a fawn are determined by it's parents. Deer breeders keep detailed records of the production of each of their animals, both bucks and does. Breeders still may not be able to see the genes of a doe, but they can, through record keeping, determine which does produce the best bucks year after year. This allows them to line breed, concentrating the most desireable genes. These pedigreed whitetail deer can be expensive, especially for bred does, but deer buyers are paying for years of blood, sweat and tears.

Deer breeding has changed everything, but keep some things in mind. It's one thing to find deer for sale, but make sure you know what you are getting before you commit to anything or write a check. Finding the right deer for sale is what it's all about. Whether you need a big sire buck for your breeding facility or a handful of bucks with the ability to influence the genetics of a native deer herd, learn as much as you can about the breeders that you are working with. Most deer breeders are great folks, but like everything, there can be some that are less than honest. Learn as much as you can about whitetail deer before you start buying!
